A gynecomastia or male breast reduction surgery is the most effective cosmetic surgical procedure among men to correct enlarged male breasts. Many men develop enlarged breasts due to various reasons like heredity, side effect of some certain medication, aging or any other unspecified reasons. The breast reduction surgery helps remove excess fat and tissues to provide a firmer and flatter contour to the chest.

The surgeon would analyse your general health before the surgery and would also perform tests to determine the cause of gynecomastia by examining the breasts and would also take measurements of the size, shape and placement of nipples and areolas to contour the chest.
Know About The Procedure
Based on the amount of fat and tissues to be removed, the gynecomastia is usually treated either with liposuction or tissue excision in order to achieve optimal results. The procedure to treat gynecomastia with liposuction involves the surgeon making tiny incisions along the armpit or the edge of areola to removes excess fat and glandular tissues, providing you with a chest contour suiting your body.
When a man has a bulge in chest with >4.0 cm in size it is considered as a case of Gynecomastia or Male breast. If you pinch chest skin at the nipple and feel a hard mass, then it may be enlarged breast gland or gynecomastia.
In most of cases it appears nearly at the age of puberty i,e 13-14 yrs. Various hormonal changes which appear at this age are responsible for gynaecomastia. Some of middle aged men of late 40 also notice chest enlargement.
In 60-70% of boys who develop breast changes at the age of puberty, these changes are temporary and disappear in a couple of years. But Approximately 30-40% of men notice male breast enlargement of 4.0 cm or more in size, and it does not reduce even after many years.
The ideal candidates for male breast reduction procedure are men with enlarged breasts. People under 18 years of age are not advisable to go for a gynecomastia as the enlarged breasts could be hormonal due to puberty and may resolve on its own with time. People opting for a gynecomastia should be of good general health with near to ideal body weight, should understand all the benefits and risks associated with the surgical procedure and should have realistic expectations with the surgery.
The procedure involves tiny incisions to be made through which excess fat and glandular tissues are removed.
The procedure requires the surgeon to remove a greater part of the glandular tissue which cannot be removed with liposuction alone and is preferred for patients have loose and sagging skin around the breasts.
A male breast reduction surgery is usually carried out as an outpatient surgery. The patients are usually provided with compression garments to be worn for a few weeks post-surgery in order to minimize swelling to the treated areas and to provide support inducing the healing process. Patients witness soreness and swelling immediately after the swelling and the surgeon would instruct and provide medication to alleviate pain and reduce swelling.
The patients get back to their normal work within 1 week following the gynecomastia surgery while vigorous exercise is to be avoided for at least 3 weeks. The swelling and soreness is experienced for some time after the surgery and proper medication is to be taken during the recovery period. Some men even notice loss of sensation in the treated area and mild pain is also witnessed in some cases which can be eased off with the medication provided by the surgeon and the sensation usually returns in about a month after the procedure but in case of any severe pain or swelling you should immediately consult the surgeon.
